Mother Earth...Cures Cancer...

Fresh lemon grass fields in Israel become Mecca for cancer patients By Allison Kaplan Sommer April 02, 2006

A drink with as little as one gram of lemon grass contains enough citral to prompt cancer cells to commit suicide in the test tube.

Israeli researchers find way to make cancer cells self-destruct - Ben Gurion University

At first, Benny Zabidov, an Israeli agriculturalist who grows greenhouses full of lush spices on a pastoral farm in Kfar Yedidya in the Sharon region, couldn't understand why so many cancer patients from around the country were showing up on his doorstep asking for fresh lemon grass. It turned out that their doctors had sent them. 'They had been told to drink eight glasses of hot water with fresh lemon grass steeped in it on the days that they went for their radiation and chemotherapy treatments,' Zabidov told ISRAEL21c. 'And this is the place you go to in Israel for fresh lemon grass.'

It all began when researchers at Ben Gurion University of the Negev discovered last year that the lemon aroma in herbs like lemon grass kills cancer cells in vitro, while leaving healthy cells unharmed. The research team was led by Dr. Rivka Ofir and Prof. Yakov Weinstein, incumbent of the Albert Katz Chair in Cell-Differentiatio n and Malignant Diseases, from the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at BGU.

Citral is the key component that gives the lemony aroma and taste in several herbal plants such as lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus), melissa (Melissa officinalis) and verbena (Verbena officinalis. )

According to Ofir, the study found that citral causes cancer cells to 'commit suicide: using apoptosis, a mechanism called programmed cell death.' A drink with as little as one gram of lemon grass contains enough citral to prompt the cancer cells to commit suicide in the test tube.

The BGU investigators checked the influence of the citral on cancerous cells by adding them to both cancerous cells and normal cells that were grown in a petri dish. The quantity added in the concentrate was equivalent to the amount contained in a cup of regular tea using one gram of lemon herbs in hot water. While the citral killed the cancerous cells, the normal cells remained unharmed.

The findings were published in the scientific journal Planta Medica, which highlights research on alternative and herbal remedies. Shortly afterwards, the discovery was featured in the popular Israeli press.
Why does it work? Nobody knows for certain, but the BGU scientists have a theory. 'In each cell in our body, there is a genetic program which causes programmed cell death. When something goes wrong, the cells divide with no control and become cancer cells.. In normal cells, when the cell discovers that the control system is not operating correctly - for example, when it recognizes that a cell contains faulty genetic material following cell division - it triggers cell death,' explains Weinstein. 'This research may explain the medical benefit of these herbs.'
The success of their research led them to the conclusion that herbs containing citral may be consumed as a preventative measure against certain cancerous cells. As they learned of the BGU findings in the press, many physicians in Israel began to believe that while the research certainly needed to be explored further, in the meantime it would be advisable for their patients, who were looking for any possible tool to fight their condition, to try to harness the cancer-destroying properties of citral.

That's why Zabidov's farm - the only major grower of fresh lemon grass in Israel in 2006- has become a pilgrimage destination for these patients. Luckily, they found themselves in sympathetic hands. Zabidov greets visitors with a large kettle of aromatic lemon grass tea, a plate of cookies, and a supportive attitude. 'My father died of cancer, and my wife's sister died young because of cancer,' said Zabidov.. 'So I understand what they are dealing with. And I may not know anything about medicine, but I'm a good listener. And so they tell me about their expensive painful treatments and what they've been through. I would never tell them to stop being treated, but it's great that they are exploring alternatives and drinking the lemon grass tea as well.'

Zabidov knew from a young age that agriculture was his calling. At age 14, he enrolled in the Kfar Hayarok Agricultural high school. After his army service, he joined an idealistic group which headed south, in the Arava desert region, to found a new moshav (agricultural settlement) called Tsofar. 'We were very successful; we raised fruits and vegetables, and,' he notes with a smile, 'We raised some very nice children.'
On a trip to Europe in the mid-80s, he began to become interested in herbs. Israel , at the time, was nothing like the trend-conscious cuisine-oriented country it is today, and the only spices being grown commercially were basics like parsley, dill, and coriander. Wandering in the Paris market, looking at the variety of herbs and spices, Zabidov realized that there was a great export potential in this niche. He brought samples back home with him, 'which was technically illegal,' he says with a guilty smile, to see how they would grow in his desert greenhouses. Soon, he was growing basil, oregano, tarragon, chives, sage, marjoram and melissa, and mint just to name a few.

His business began to outgrow his desert facilities, and so he decided to move north, settling in the moshav of Kfar Yedidya, an hour and a half north of Tel Aviv. He is now selling 'several hundred kilos' of lemon grass per week, and has signed with a distributor to package and put it in health food stores. Zabidov has taken it upon himself to learn more about the properties of citral, and help his customers learn more, and has invited medical experts to his farm to give lectures about how the citral works and why.

He also felt a responsibility to know what to tell his customers about its use. 'When I realized what was happening, I picked up the phone and called Dr. Weinstein at Ben-Gurion University , because these people were asking me exactly the best way to consume the citral. He said to put the loose grass in hot water, and drink about eight glasses each day.'

Zabidov is pleased by the findings, not simply because it means business for his farm, but because it might influence his own health. Even before the news of its benefits were demonstrated, he and his family had been drinking lemon grass in hot water for years, 'just because it tastes good.'

"Whatever is Necessary to Protect and Restore the Gulf Coast"
Posted by Katelyn Sabochik on May 27, 2010 at 04:47 PM EDT

Earlier today, the President took questions from the press at the White House on the BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico. During his opening remarks, the President updated the American people on the “top kill” procedure that was approved yesterday. This procedure attempts to plug the well with densely packed mud to reduce or stop the flow of oil. It’s still too soon to tell if the procedure will work.

The President also clarified the role the Federal Government has played in the response since Day 1:

The American people should know that from the moment this disaster began, the federal government has been in charge of the response effort. As far as I’m concerned, BP is responsible for this horrific disaster, and we will hold them fully accountable on behalf of the United States as well as the people and communities victimized by this tragedy. We will demand that they pay every dime they owe for the damage they’ve done and the painful losses that they’ve caused. And we will continue to take full advantage of the unique technology and expertise they have to help stop this leak.
But make no mistake: BP is operating at our direction. Every key decision and action they take must be approved by us in advance. I’ve designated Admiral Thad Allen – who has nearly four decades of experience responding to such disasters – as the National Incident Commander, and if he orders BP to do something to respond to this disaster, they are legally bound to do it. So, for example, when they said they would drill one relief well to stem this leak we demanded a backup and ordered them to drill two. And they are in the process of drilling two.
The President emphasized that the government would do everything in it’s power to stop the leak and clean up the mess and was employing the best and brightest minds from around the country to solve this problem. In addition to cleaning up the oil, the Administration is also focused on restoring the livelihoods of families who rely on the Gulf to make a living

We’re also doing whatever it takes to help the men and women whose livelihoods have been disrupted and even destroyed by this spill -– everyone from fishermen to restaurant and hotel owners. So far the Small Business Administration has approved loans and allowed many small businesses to defer existing loan payments. At our insistence, BP is paying economic injury claims, and we’ll make sure that when all is said and done, the victims of this disaster will get the relief that they are owed. We’re not going to abandon our fellow citizens. We’ll help them recover and we will help them rebuild.

President Barack Obama delivers remarks and takes questions from the press in the East Room of the White House, May 27, 2010. (Official White House Photo by Pete Souza)

To ensure that a spill of this magnitude never happens again, President Obama outlined immediate steps the Department of the Interior will take to reform the Minerals Management Service, which is responsible for issuing drilling leases and regulating oil facilities:

Additionally, after reading the report’s recommendations with Secretary Salazar and other members of my administration, we’re going to be ordering the following actions: First, we will suspend the planned exploration of two locations off the coast of Alaska. Second, we will cancel the pending lease sale in the Gulf of Mexico and the proposed lease sale off the coast of Virginia. Third, we will continue the existing moratorium and suspend the issuance of new permits to drill new deepwater wells for six months. And four, we will suspend action on 33 deepwater exploratory wells currently being drilled in the Gulf of Mexico.
The President also made the broader point that this tragedy should serve as a “wake-up call” for Americans that our dependence on oil is not sustainable. Focusing our resources on renewable energy will not only protect our environment, but “it will it will create a new, homegrown, American industry that can lead to countless new businesses and new jobs.”

President Obama is scheduled to make his second trip to the Gulf Coast region tomorrow.

I know this disaster, if stopped right now...would have taken too long. While I along with most people think this is true, I am still heartened to think and see that we have, at last, a real leader and responsible President. This is similar to driving a large Ship...unfortunately. The Captain cannot just jump in front of the ship and immediately stop it, but has to be gently calculating to maneuver and slow it to a stop...the only thing we have to now have, is Patience. Our Coast Guard, our Scientists, Global Scientists and a real President is on the job, so at this point, continue to support the industries in the area, as you have done in the past...especially the tourist industry... and let the professionals do their jobs. It will end; and Mother Earth will heal herself as she always does...and this loss will help us to understand and put better controls in place and thereby stop that spill in twenty years time which may have been 10 times larger than this...yes I am an optimist...that is why Mother Nature tells me I'm her favorite...along with the rest of you all.

Racism? Segregation? Ever heard of it Rand??? Sarah???

This is really good journalism by Rachel...

Racism by any other name smells just as much

How can he say he is not racist or have racist views???
Is he understanding what he is really advocating?
I do not think so, and the Bell-Weather I use for many things is to ask one question..."WWSD, what would Sarah do?" Obviously anything she says or does you go the other that end, yesterday, Sunday 5/23, she unequivocally agreed with Rand and his rantings...leading me to run in the opposite direction and conclude they are both wrong as hell.
Sarah has now changed her Shrill Baby Baby Drill chant to "Domestic Extraction of Resources"...shit, intelligence with this lady does resemble the mismatched picture of lipstick on a pig...WTF

SECOND CONTACT, FROM ME...Good Day Mr. Anderson, This is very interesting, please continue as you do indeed have my full attention.

123 Deansgate
Direct Tel:+447024093693

Good Day Teeluck,

How are you today, I am Andrew Anderson, a solicitor at law. I am the personal attorney/sole executor to the late Mr. Dickson Sooknarine, hereinafter referred to as my client' who worked as an independent oil magnate in my country and who died in a car crash with his immediate family on the 4th of oct, 2004.

Since the death of my client in oct, 2004, I have written several letters to the embassy with an intent to locate any of his extended relatives whom shall be claimants/beneficiaries of his abandoned personal estate and all such efforts have been to no avail.

Moreso,I have received official letters in the last few weeks suggesting a likely proceeding for confiscation of his abandoned personal assets in line with existing laws by the bank in which my client deposited the sum of 30 million pounds.
On this note I decided to search for a credible person and finding that you bear a similar last name, I was urged to contact you, that I may, with your consent, present you to the "trustee" bank as my late client's surviving family member so as to enable you put up a claim to the bank in that capacity as a next of kin of my client.

I find this possible for the fuller reasons that you bear a similar last name with my client making it a lot easier for you to put up a claim in that capacity. I propose that 50% of the net sum will accrue to you at the conclusion of this deal in so far as I do not incur further expenses.
Therefore, to facilitate the immediate transfer of this fund, you need, first to contact me via email signifying your interest and as soon as I obtain your confidence, I will immediately appraise you with the complete details as well as fax you the documents, with which you are to proceed and I shall direct on how to put up an application to the bank.

HOWEVER, you will have to accent to an express agreement which I will forward to you in order to bind us in this transaction.
Upon the receipt of your reply, I will send you by fax or E-mail the next step to take. I will not fail to bring to your notice that this proposal is hitch- free and that you should not entertain any fears as the required arrangements have been made for the completion of this transfer. Like I said, I require only a solemn confidentiality.

Best regards,
Andrew Anderson.

Hello Teeluck,

Thanks so much for your response.
I would prefer if we talk this matter over on the phone, however, I request that you go through the details below for a better understanding of this possible joint venture.

My mail to you was written as a matter of last resort because of the circumstances surrounding this claim. Mr Dickson Sooknarine was an oil merchant and he had oil dealings around Europe and Africa. He died in 2004 at 54, along side his wife, Maria, 46, and their only daughter, Katharina, 11.

I am not too sure you are actually related to this person because we have since carried out a search on his actual extended family ties and which efforts have been to no avail and hence my contacting you. I had contacted you to solicit your honest assistance in reprofiling funds being to my late client. I want you to consider the details so you could understand the fuller reasons I need your co-operation.

Mr Dickson Sooknarine lived most of his years here in the LONDON. I served as his private attorney for the last eight years preceeding his death, and I had known the family a little while before then. Mr Dickson migrated into LONDON a long time ago as an orphan.I never knew his father but I knew him to be the Late Mr Antonio who died in Belgium.I contacted you because after the death of my late client, I was informed by the Bank to search for any member of his extended family (related especially consanguinally), to put up a claim, or who could be so represented as managers or trustees for his deposited funds with them which stands at over 30 Million Pounds due to the fact that he died with his immediate family members. After preliminary efforts of search which came to no avail, We were given an ultimatum at the begining of the new year to look for some one to come for the claim or have the funds liquidated and made unserviceable in accordance with existing laws because it will be assumed that no member of his family is alive. However, it might interest you to know that, after a thorough investigation in the Bank, I found out that some members of the company are currently planning to divert this fund in their selfish interest and only want to use the excuse that since I am not able to look for some one to make the claim, the money should be made unserviceable and that means reverting the fund to the Government while the company retains a percentage of it.After their plans and professional consideration on my part, I decided to look for some one credible, with the same last name with my late client, to apply for this claim due to the fact that I have at my possesion some legal documents which are very important and which might be requested by them and which, can only be provided by my chambers since they have since been with us.

I feel and know that you will be able to make this claim successfully because of your rare last name which is the same as that of my late client's and as a result of this I do not want the Bank to be aware that I contacted you first in order to prevent them from going into much investigations on whom you actually are and that can put the success of this transaction on the line.I want you to be rest assured that this is legal with no risk involved, since all the legal documents that gives you the right to make the claim is available. This is a deal I am offering you and I want you to know that it requires only a mature mind to understand all I am saying and I believe you are mature enough which is the reason I am going further.

I am taking my time to explain all these to you now because I want you to see the reasons why my name should not be mentioned any time you are discussing with the members of the Bank and why this transaction has to be kept really confidential in order for us to be able to achieve our goals neatly.NOTE that if they request to know how you came to know that your family member (Dickson) had such an amount of funds with them and who contacted you, which I am not sure they will ask, but in order to be on the safer side, if you are asked, be confident to tell them that the extended family discovered some documents in his archives showing that Mr Dickson Sooknarine lodged such funds with them and that is why you have been sent by the paternal family to contact the bank. Anyway, further deliberations will be held on this as we proceed.I want you to know that I have these documents as well as the death certificate of Mr Dickson Sooknarine to show to you as proof and I will release them to you as soon as I have attained your confidence, maybe after we speak on phone. I will also provide you with any information you need as we proceed. Please bear in mind that you have to be really sure if you are going ahead or not for I do not want to jeopardise the success of this transaction which means so much to me at the moment. I will wait for your response and please do not forget about the discreet of this transaction.

Send your direct telephone number so that I can call you or you can call me on my direct telephone number +447024093693.

Best Regards,
Andrew Anderson.

Hello Mr. Anderson, I am very curious, as you would imagine and would also like to speak with you. I don't know if you are aware, but I reside in New York. My cell phone number is 917 --- ----, please feel free to call me at your convenience so we can better discuss the matter. Thank you, Teeluck.

Hello Teeluck,

How are you today?I tried calling you today but could not get through to you maybe its because of the time difference. This is to notify you that we dont have enough time on our side to complete these deal with the bank .I will prefer that we use only email for now as we dont have enough time left to get this transaction finalised, okay? Please always check your mail daily so that we can finalised this transaction within 10 to 14 working days.

All I need from you is just for you to follow my instructions at all time and if you do that we will have this deal finanlised with 14 working days successfully, okay?

I am sending you further details on the next step we have to adopt.I appreciate your desire to assist with this process and I must say I am very willing to proceed with you on this especially as I already know that you understand the nature of this transaction.

I am going further in this mail to give you more details especially on the contact of the said bank. However,I need you to constantly bear in mind that you will be required to handle this transaction with all diligence and confidentiality so we could see it through as smoothly as possible. Remember that we are talking about over 30 million pounds.

All you need is to understand the entirety of this and you will not be having any problem executing it. I will stand by you to give you the required advice at every stage of this transaction

You must therefore make the officials of the bank understand that you discovered some deposit documents in the archives/library of your late family member Late Dickson Sooknarine during your recent search in his old archives and that the deposit documents show a back-dated lodge in their banking institution and that you are willing at this time to put up a claim to repartriate the funds to the extended family.

Now,the procedure I recommend you adopt is to send a mail to the bank like I have explained. The mail should read thus:

Dear Sir,

I am Teeluck Sooknarine,
I am writing to you seeking your urgent assistance relating to my late relative,Mr Dickson Sooknarine.Recently there were documents found in my relative's archived, papers indicating that he held an account with your institution.

Please verify that you have a late depositor as such and if you do, I am seeking your assistance in having the account wound up and the money, as well as accrued interests returned to our family.

Could you please reply with what you require to support my claim and initiate proceedings to have this matter resolved.

Yours Sincerely,

Teeluck Sooknarine(For and on behalf of the Sooknarine`s family)

The name of the bank is NATWEST BANK, their contact email of the CLAIM DEPARTMENT is

I would very much prefer if your first contact to the bank goes by way of E-mail as it may not be the best for you to speak with any official on the phone yet until you have received a preliminary response from them and which response you will need to forward to me for my own perusal.

It is also important that you keep in touch with me as well as forward me any future replies from the bank as soon as they get to you and I will be sure to know what further steps to take.

I will like to inform you that this deal means so much to me and I am trusting that we can work this out together as soon as possible and be happier for it.My direct telephone number is: +447024093693.

Hello Andrew,
I have done a search of you and Dickson and have not gotten any information. I am wary of scams. You will need to give me information so that I can verify who you are and if you worked in the capacity for Dickson as you claimed. I await your reply, Teeluck.

ALAS...That was the last I heard from my new best friend Anderson...NOTICE, the penmanship of the letter has greatly improved from the incoherent letters from the old Nigerian Scammers. They also posted information to somewhat verify PANNONE LLP, AND ALSO THE NAME ANDREW ANDERSON, AS WELL AS THE BANK. They are much more efficient now in their diction...BEWARE MY FRIENDS...

Monday, May 17, 2010

I got this in my email...beware...

Dear Friend,

I know this may come as surprise and sceptic to you. My Name is Mr. Zaki Ahmed, I am one of the officials in the Energy management board in Burkina Faso, West Africa.
We had a contract with Denmark through the Burkina Faso Danish Cooperation, which was signed on the 4th of June, 2009 on the Electrification of the Urban centres, offices and rural dwellers. The project has been executed, you can check on the website.

But, the main issue of contacting you is to intimate you that during the award of this contract, a few of my colleagues and l had inflated the amount of this contract and the OVER- INVOICED is being safeguarded under our custody.

However, we have decided to transfer this sum of money, thirty million Us dollars ($30million Us Dollars) out of this Country for disbursement. Hence, we seek for a reliable, honest and not greedy foreign partner whom we shall use his or her account for transferring the fund. And we agreed that the account owner shall benefit 30% of the total amount of money, 65% is for us here, and 5% will be used for miscellaneous expenses during the transfer.

If you are capable to handle the transaction without hitches and flaws, then we have confidence in the business and a risk free transfer from our side.
Please, make it TOP SECRET and avoid every channel of implicating us here thereby endanger our career.

Therefore, if you will not be able to handle it,please hold on your peace for our sake we are public servants. I pray to God for his providence for a smooth transfer, so that our retiring soon or later will be a better and blissful retirement life, as such we are very cautious towards actualising this noble venture. It can also be a once in life opportunity for you, because l know that we are going to see face-face, preferably come down to Burkina Faso and verify on the claim on the said amount of money in the bank. Besides, to discuss business and investment in your country at large, and thereafter sit together to decide on the means of transferring.

Do contact me immediately for more detail and clarifications.

Please, time is no longer on our side and hope to read from you urgently.

Zaki Ahmed.

Putting the Economy at Risk to Protect Wall Street Profits
Posted by Dan Pfeiffer on May 12, 2010 at 05:20 PM EDT
When it comes to trying to defeat financial reform, Wall Street lobbyists just won’t give up. This afternoon the Senate began consideration of a Republican effort to wipe out the strong derivatives provisions written by Senators Lincoln and Dodd in the Senate’s financial reform bill.

Here’s the bottom line: the Republican substitute has weak standards for major market players and no transparent trading. It doesn’t require major firms to hold capital against their derivatives transactions, doesn’t require an open and transparent market, and doesn’t regulate the next AIG or ENRON.

So what does the substitute amendment do? It keeps risky derivatives trading in the dark and strips the Senate bill of provisions that would help prevent the build-up of risk that threatened the financial system in the financial crisis. It strips provisions that make the derivatives market safer and more transparent. It deletes whistleblower protections. It weakens rules on conflicts of interest. It eliminates a requirement that cleared transactions be publicly reported. And it deletes new authority for the SEC to set position limits – leaving room for Wall Street’s manipulation and abuse.

Derivatives exist to help businesses manage risk. They can help airline companies protect against an unexpected rise in fuel prices and they can help farmers lock in a price for their produce.

But derivatives can also allow big financial firms make large, risky bets in the shadows. For example, because of a lack of transparency in the derivatives market, AIG was allowed to place hundreds of billions of dollars in bets without the money to back them up if the bets went bad. And in the end, AIG built up so much risk through derivatives that it put the entire financial system at risk.

The Dodd bill would help prevent excessive risk in derivatives from threatening the system again.

In place of the unregulated market we have today, the Dodd bill would bring the derivates markets into the open. It would subject derivatives dealers to strong, comprehensive oversight with robust capital and margin buffers. And it would require that all standard derivatives be traded on exchanges or other electronic trading platforms.

Despite the enormous damage wrought by unregulated derivatives trading, Wall Street lobbyists are spending millions of dollars to weaken reform with loopholes and carve-outs that would exempt large derivatives traders from the rules of the road. The lobbyist might keep fighting, but it’s up to the Senate to show which side they are on, and throughout this process reform for the American people have won. We hope the Senate keeps up this winning streak and defeats this dangerous amendment.

A Great Man Died Today…
And though he has helped many,
From his bosom to his grave,
A great man died today…

Even though I told him not to go…
Knowing that my heart would weep,
I know he starts his journey,
On the other side of sleep,
A great man died today…

He loved a great many, as surely he,
Was loved as much the same…
And I know I’ll not forget him,
I shall always know his name,
A Great Man Died Today…

He toiled for love and fortune,
In this world he made his name,
He built many lives and Empires,
And won many hard fought wars,
A Great Man Died Today…

He protected me from the hounds of hell,
And made my journey sure,
And even though he knows I’ll miss him,
He knows by him, I’m well,
A Great Man Died Today…

The Elders remember the old days...before Muhammed...before Jesus...before Moses...even Abraham...there were SIXTY MILLION of them when the killers came...and murdered over 59 Million of them...

How Sad and Ironic that they now cry foul...that the Mexicans who owned the land they now call Arizona are illegally there...They tried to strip the Native American of his connection with his Universe, with his spirit...they tried to rip away his pride...they failed. Look...he is still here.

"The Gulf Oil Spill: An Extinction Level Event?"
by Mike Adams

"Reports about the massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill have been largely underestimated, according to commentators, including Paul Noel, a Software Engineer for the U.S. Army at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama. He believes that the pocket of oil that's been hit is so powerful and under so much pressure that it may be virtually impossible to contain it. And Noel is not the only person questioning the scope of this disaster.

A recent story from the Christian Science Monitor (CSM) reports that many independent scientists believe the leak is spewing far more than the 5,000 barrels, or 210,000 gallons, per day being reported by most media sources. They believe the leak could be discharging up to 25,000 barrels (more than one million gallons) of crude oil a day right now. The riser pipe that was bent and crimped after the oil rig sank is restricting some of the flow from the tapped oil pocket, but as the leaking oil rushes into the well's riser, it is forcing sand with it at very high speeds and "sand blasting" the pipe (which is quickly eroding its structural integrity).

According to a leaked National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration memo obtained by an Alabama newspaper, if the riser erodes any further and creates more leaks, up to 50,000 barrels, or 2.1 million gallons, per day of crude oil could begin flooding Gulf waters every day.

When this disaster first occurred, the media downplayed it. BP spokespersons were quick to claim that the leakage was minimal and that crews would eventually be able to contain it. But as time went on, it became clear that things were not under control and that the spill was far more serious than we were originally told. (Gee, sound familiar? Remember Katrina?) Yet some of the media reports still seem more like press releases than actual reporting because they continue to repeat what the public relations cleanup crews (pun intended) would like the public to believe rather than what's actually happening. Reality, it seems, has a nasty habit of interfering with corporate spin.

Cap and trade becomes "cap and pray:" The New York Times yesterday reported that BP is working on a large containment dome that is intended to cap the leak and catch the escaping oil so that it can be safely pumped to the surface. Meanwhile, crews are said to be working on fixing the broken blow-out preventer valve that should have stopped the leak from happening in the first place, but they have been unsuccessful thus far.

Almost every report says that BP is doing everything it can to contain the spill and stop the leak, even though the company claims it is not technically at fault. According to an article from the U.K. Daily Mail, BP's CEO Tony Hayward recently responded to the cleanup efforts by explaining, "This is not our accident but it is our responsibility to deal with it." Swiss-based Transocean is the company that actually owned and operated the sunken rig. It manned the rig with its own crew and BP just leased it from Transocean (which makes you wonder why BP is so willing to take full responsibility for everything). BP says that it's working on a relief well, but that it could take up to three months to complete. Until then, the company is trying several different approaches to at least slow the leak and hopefully stop it altogether.

Mind you, almost all of the information about the spill from day one has come directly from BP which obviously has every incentive to downplay the true environmental destruction that could be caused by this oil spill. Even the word "spill" is incorrect. This isn't some ship of oil that spilled into the ocean - it's a "volcano" of oil spewing from the belly of Mother Earth herself. It's under extremely high pressure, it's spewing a huge volume of oil directly into the ocean, and there so far seems to be no human-engineered way of stopping it (short of setting off an underground nuclear bomb near the well site).

Addressing the unanswered questions: According to the CSM article, environmental risk models are normally performed for pollutants like crude oil, yet not one model has yet been released for this incident by BP or the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Many are wondering why this crucial information has not been made public. Could it be because the results of the model might seem too catastrophic? Neither has there been an adequate explanation given for exactly why the oil rig exploded... twice! Some reports indicate that the crews responsible for properly cementing the well casing didn't do it right. Others suggest that the oil deposit was just too large and under too much pressure for the equipment to handle it. (Be careful where you poke around the planet if you can't handle what comes out, right?) It's also important to note that, according to a recent New York Times article, Halliburton was actually the company responsible for all the cementing work on the rig, which brings a third party into the picture.

BP's federal permits allowed the company to drill up to 20,000 feet deep, but according to one of the workers who was onboard the rig during the explosion, drilling in excess of 22,000 feet had been taking place. This same worker is said to handle company records for BP, but BP has denied these allegations. BP has declined to comment, however, on other allegations that the spill happened because it chose not to install necessary deep-water valves which would have acted as a last resort seal of protection in the event of an emergency. Several other allegations include suspicions that the crews allowed gas to build up in the well bore and that the rig operator tried to detach too quickly from the well, causing a disruption. BP, Halliburton and Transocean have all indicated that they are continuing to investigate the situation. When companies investigate themselves, however, the truth rarely comes out.

The possibility of an extinction event? It's hard to say exactly what's going on in the Gulf right now, especially because there are so many conflicting reports and unanswered questions. But one thing's for sure: if the situation is actually much worse than we're being led to believe, there could be worldwide catastrophic consequences. If it's true that millions upon millions of gallons of crude oil are flooding the Gulf with no end in sight, the massive oil slicks being created could make their way into the Gulf Stream currents, which would carry them not only up the East Coast but around the world where they could absolutely destroy the global fishing industries.

Already these slicks are making their way into Gulf wetlands and beaches where they are destroying birds, fish, and even oyster beds. This is disastrous for both the seafood industry and the people whose livelihoods depend on it. It's also devastating to the local wildlife which could begin to die off from petroleum toxicity. Various ecosystems around the world could be heavily impacted by this spill in ways that we don't even yet realize.

There's no telling where this continuous stream of oil will end up and what damage it might cause. Theoretically, we could be looking at modern man's final act of destruction on planet Earth, because this one oil rig blowout could set in motion a global extinction wave that begins with the oceans and then whiplashes back onto human beings themselves.

We cannot live without life in the oceans. Man is arrogant to drill so deeply into the belly of Mother Earth, and through this arrogance, we may have just set in motion events that will ultimately destroy us. In the future, we may in fact talk about life on Earth as "pre-spill" versus "post-spill." Because a post-spill world may be drowned in oil, devoid of much ocean life, and suffering a global extinction event that will crash the human population by 90 percent or more.

We may have just done to ourselves, in other words, what a giant meteorite did to the dinosaurs."

Stories from CNN

(CNN) - Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal expressed frustration Saturday with efforts to clean up a massive oil spill creeping toward the Gulf coast, saying "we continue to be concerned with BP's ability to respond to this incident."

Jindal said he has been working with local officials to develop cleanup contingency plans, but needs funding approval from BP and authorization from the U.S. Coast Guard's incident commander to move forward.

"We need to empower our locals on the ground," he said in criticizing the response effort thus far.

"The oil that is leaking offshore, the oil that is coming onto our coast threatens more than just our wildlife, our fisheries, our coast, this oil literally threatens our way of life," he said.

(CNN) -- There's no way to stop oily water from reaching land along the Gulf Coast, but experts will use tools both massive and microscopic to clean it up.
Oil-soaked sand on beaches in the eastern Gulf Coast can be scooped up with heavy equipment, but the grassy marshes in the Mississippi Delta can't be handled that way, said Ralph Portier, a professor of environmental sciences at Louisiana State University.
Along the Louisiana and Mississippi coast, "you're talking about a sea of grass, if you will," similar to the Florida Everglades, Portier said. "When it gets oiled, if you try and remove some of this stuff, you're going to do more damage than good.
"In Gulf Shores, Alabama, and Destin, Florida, you can do that, but not here in what we like to call the Redneck Riviera," the southern Louisiana native said.

Tides, wind and rain will drive the oil deeper into the marsh, down into the vegetative mat, making it impossible for humans to go in and clean manually, he said. But once the flow of oil is stopped -- and no one knows when that will be -- scientists will spread fertilizer to boost several species of microscopic plants that degrade hydrocarbons such as oil.
In areas of especially heavy oiling, millions more of these microbes, grown in laboratories, could be brought in as reinforcements, Portier said. In warm spring and summer weather, the light, sweet crude "will degrade in weeks to months," he said.
Asphalt-like balls of petroleum embedded in the marshes "will be a little more complicated," he said.

"The microbial community will have to bite off little pieces and degrade them a bit at a time," he said.
There is no environmental concern with the technique because the microbes are not toxic and are native to the area, with different species thriving in fresh, brackish and salt water, Portier added.
"The question is what that long time frame will do to those plant species and what that will mean for habitat for seafood and migratory birds," he said. "Picture if the Everglades were being oiled, what a national tragedy that would be. And this area is even more fragile and productive."
The Gulf Coast is home to vast numbers of birds, animals and fish that need to be protected, said Tom MacKenzie of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Endangered sea turtles are due to come in to shore soon and lay eggs in the coastal sand.
"A whole generation could be affected," MacKenzie said.
Floating booms to block oil from coming in cannot protect the entire coast, he said, so crews are prioritizing sensitive wildlife areas, including nesting grounds for pelicans and butterfly migration areas.
"This has the potential to be truly devastating," he said.

The oil spill response team has recovered 23,968 barrels (1,006,656 gallons) of an oil-water mix, according to the Deepwater Horizon Joint Information Center. Nearly 70 boats, including skimmers, tugs, barges and recovery vessels, are being used to deploy booms and chemical dispersant, which makes the oil evaporate more readily.

Drill Baby Drill? Really Bobby? Sarah? Johnny Mac? Anyone?? Ya Think? Now that the shit has hit the fan, you still wanna drill?? What happened to "These Drill Rigs are High Tech and Safe"?? Cat got ya tongue? Did you talk to Sarah about it yet?? Where is she by the way...She's kinda silent just about now Huh?...You Betcha she's silent...Put more Lipstick on the pig...see if that will help with the cleanup.
